Contact Information: For more information contact the Office of External Affairs at (214) 665-2200.
To minimize the amount of hazardous substances that may accompany debris into Louisiana landfills, the next sweep of Orleans Parish to pick up household hazardous waste will begin Tuesday, November 1, 2005. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Orleans Parish officials are overseeing this collection effort.
Household hazardous waste includes materials such as batteries, paint and workshop supplies, cleaning and pool supplies, lawn and garden products, pesticides, automotive products and other household chemicals. Items that cannot be accepted include animal manure or carcasses, human waste or other biological waste, spoiled food or mold damaged items, tires, furniture and general trash.
Residents of Orleans Parish are asked to collect flood-damaged containers and place them curbside for proper disposal. Prior to placing the materials curbside for pickup, residents are also asked to clearly mark the containers and place leaking containers in plastic bags to prevent spills. Household hazardous items may contain materials that should never be dumped, poured down drains or into streets.
