2021 EPA Biosolids National Meeting
The Environmental Protection Agency National Biosolids Meetings bring together the EPA, state and Tribal co-regulators, utilities, academia and biosolids stakeholders to discuss technical and programmatic challenges and needs. The 2021 EPA National Biosolids Meeting occurred virtually November 2-4, 2021. Sessions were recorded and a summary of the meeting was produced.

EPA National Biosolids Meeting 2021 (Session 2): Biosolids Management Priorities Panel | Deborah Nagle, Director of the EPA Office of Science and Technology, Jeffrey Robichaud Director of the EPA Region 7 Water Divison, and Karen Mogus Deputy Director of the California State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Water Quality participated in a panel discussion on biosolids management priorities. |
EPA National Biosolids Meeting 2021 (Session 3): EPA’s Preliminary Biosolids Risk Assessment Approach – Biosolids Pollutant Prioritization | Dr. Richard Judson of EPA’s Office of Research and Development, Center for Computational Toxicology and Exposure gave a presentation on biosolids pollutant prioritization, specifically the Public Information Curation and Synthesis (PICS) approach. |
EPA National Biosolids Meeting 2021 (Session 4): EPA’s Preliminary Biosolids Risk Assessment Approach – PFOA/PFOS Eco-Toxicity Values for Risk Evaluation | Amanda Jarvis of EPA’s Office of Water, Office of Science and Technology, Heath and Ecological Criteria Division gave a presentation on the development of PFOA and PFOS ecotoxicity values that will be used in the biosolids risk assessment for those chemicals. |
EPA National Biosolids Meeting 2021 (Session 5): EPA’s Preliminary Biosolids Risk Assessment Approach | Dr. David Tobias, Biosolids Risk Assessment Lead, EPA Health and Ecological Criteria Division, presented EPA’s risk screening and refined risk assessment model. |
EPA National Biosolids Meeting 2021 (Session 6): Environmental Justice | Catherine Flowers, Founder of the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice and Vice Chair of the Biden Administration’s inaugural White House Environmental Justice Advisory Committee and Dennis Randolph, an experienced local government manager and engineer with over 50-years of experience and former member of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council participated in an interactive panel discussion on environmental justice and biosolids. |
EPA National Biosolids Meeting 2021 (Session 7): Biosolids PFAS Methods | Adrian Hanley, Clean Water Act Methods Team Lead, discussed the recently released CWA Method 1633 for 40 PFAS compounds in media including biosolids, SW-846 methods and modified EPA 537 methods. |
EPA National Biosolids Meeting 2021 (Session 8): State Biosolids Requirements Panel | Michael Le, EPA Region 10 Biosolids Coordinator, Kyle Dorsey, Washington State Lead Biosolids Coordinator, and Terry Alber, Idaho Biosolids Coordinator participated on a panel whose intent was for state co-regulators to learn how other states regulate biosolids according to Part 503 and highlight the differences in regulation between authorized and non-authorized states. |

Janine Burke-Wells, Executive Director of the Northeast Biosolids and Residuals Association, Ben Axt, Biosolids Forestry Project Manager from King County Wastewater Treatment Division and Karri Ving, Business Strategy and Performance Manager for San Francisco Public Utilities Commission participated on a panel discussion climate change and the biosolids nexus. |
EPA National Biosolids Meeting 2021 (Session 10): Key Research | Dr. Christopher Impellitteri of EPA Office of Research and Development; Ashwin Dhanasekar and Lola Olabode, Research Program Managers of Water Research Foundation (WRF); Dr. Nick Basta, Ohio State University of the W4170; and Jake Adler, Environmental Analyst of Association of Clean Water Administrators (ACWA) presented on what research is underway in the biosolids field. |
