2025 California Wildfires
EPA’s work is part of an all-of-government response to the Los Angeles wildfires. EPA and other responding federal agencies are approaching their work in communities with utmost respect.
On January 14, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assigned EPA to:
- assess,
- remove, and
- safely dispose of hazardous materials from all burned areas.
EPA’s work removing hazardous materials is Phase 1 of the federal cleanup response and is free to residents.
On January 16, EPA’s first teams began assessing burned properties in the Eaton and Palisades fire burn areas and will soon begin collecting hazardous materials from burned properties.
- Teams from California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control will be working with EPA as part of our unified response.
- All work will also be done in close coordination with state, county, and local government partners.
