Abstract:
This study of the Chicago and Atlanta metropolitan areas seeks to overcome difficulties that afflicted previous studies for assessing values for improved air quality. Issues that are crucial to the design, implementation and analysis in the contingent valuation method are discussed drawing from the work done in the Denver Brown Cloud methods study (see Field and Laboratory Experiments on the Reliability of the Contingent Valuation Method under List of all reports in the Series above) by the same group at the University of Colorado. The report describes the Eastern visibility survey design in detail, presents the implementation of and data obtained from the surveys, provides summary statistics on the overall response and discusses the econometric techniques employed to estimate visibility values and the results of those estimation procedures.
