Hazardous Waste Cleanup: Bridgestone Americas (Firestone) Tire Facility - Noblesville, Indiana

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)  is responsible for overseeing the remediation of the site. In September 2009, the owner of Textileather and EPA signed an Administrative Order on Consent requiring investigation and remediation of the site by Textileather.

Site Description

The former Firestone facility was in operation from 1936 to 2009, when the facility was demolished. The site consists of 47 acres within a commercial and residential area of Noblesville, Indiana. The facility manufactured molded, rubber products for large vehicles and semi-trucks. The property includes two historic landfills, both stopped by the early 1970s. One landfill was used for solid, rubber waste and has contributed only slightly to the overall site contamination. The other landfill was a former sand and gravel pit that was filled with drums and other facility wastes and contributes significantly to the groundwater contamination. The groundwater constituents of concern mostly include trichloroethene (TCE) and its degradation products. Significant on-site and off-site soil remediation has taken place in the past to address PCB releases. Some on-going monitoring continues to ensure the PCB remedies were successful. The groundwater conceptual site model is subject to five-year reviews to ensure contamination is being addressed in a prompt fashion.
