Public Notice: EPA Begins Sixth Five-Year Review of Reilly Tar and Chemical Superfund Site
Summary
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the Reilly Tar and Chemical Superfund site, located at 1500 S. Tibbs Avenue in West Indianapolis, Indiana. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure that the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the sixth five-year review of this site and is expected to be completed February 2025.
The site cleanup includes 5 phases designed collectively to safely contain and/or clean up all contamination at the site. It includes thermal treatment and solidification of contaminated soils, soil/ gravel and concrete covers, and a groundwater collection and extraction system. As part of an effort to finish the site cleanup more quickly, EPA modified the groundwater remedy in 2021 from the existing groundwater collection and extraction system to a biosparging system. This system consists of injecting oxygen into groundwater to break down contamination and is expected to begin operation in 2025.
The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have. Contact the Community Involvement Coordinator or Remedial Project Manager for any questions.
