Selected Application Summary
The selected application will install a solar photovoltaic and battery electric storage system microgrid to provide renewable electricity to the Hopi Reservation, offsetting grid electricity use, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing energy sovereignty. The selected application will provide critical improvements and stability to the aging Arizona electric power distribution network that serves Hopi villages and help activate the Hopi Utilities Corporation’s workforce development plan. Efforts will provide substantial community benefits. Combined with other federal investment, the project will provide first-time access to power for nearly 900 homes. It also will provide improved indoor air quality, fewer blackouts, reduced energy costs, and increased energy equity and independence.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Install a 10-megawatt solar photovoltaic and 10-megawatt-hour battery electric storage system microgrid with 11.9 miles of electric power distribution lines to provide renewable electricity to the Hopi Reservation, offsetting 100% of grid electricity usage.
- Increase electricity access and reliability in areas that lack grid connectivity.
- Strengthen the Tribe’s resilience in the event of power outages.
- Train 12 to 24 Hopi Tribal members in technical skills for solar careers, including installation of system components and providing operations and maintenance.
- Improve indoor air quality and public health through reduced burning of coal and biomass in homes for heating needs.
Activities and benefits summarized above reflect the measures in Hopi Utilities Corporation’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (0.4 MB).
