Selected Application Summary
The selected application will conduct energy audits to assess conditions, identify deficiencies, and support weatherization improvements to increase the energy efficiency of residential, governmental, and commercial buildings in the Lower Sioux Indian Community. Using innovative, bio-based insulation materials, the project will reduce the community’s energy use and reliance on fossil fuels to improve local climate resiliency. A commercial energy efficiency improvement fund will be established to implement the most beneficial projects in the 22 Tribally managed buildings.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Conduct weatherization energy savings projects at 60 residential buildings to reduce utility costs and improve indoor air quality.
- Transition to the use of Hempcrete, an innovative plant-based, lower-carbon insulation material instead of conventional building materials, such as fiberglass.
- Install 70 residential cold climate air-source heat pumps to reduce propane use by more than 60%.
- Establish an energy efficiency improvement fund to target energy efficiency investments at commercial buildings to achieve the most cost-effective opportunities.
- Create training and jobs necessary to scale up capabilities and operations to insulate and retrofit community buildings.
Activities and benefits summarized above reflect the measures in Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (2.8 MB).
1 The emission reduction estimates, as well as the descriptions of measures and benefits, were summarized from information provided by the applicant. These estimates, along with the award amount, are subject to change.
EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of August 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
