Public Notice: Omaha Lead National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site, Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska
Summary
Third Five-Year Review Completed – Residential Lead Cleanup
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has completed the Third Five-Year Review (FYR) of the remedial action (cleanup) for residential yards at the Omaha Lead National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site (site). FYRs are required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (commonly known as Superfund) when hazardous substances stay on-site above levels that allow unrestricted use and unlimited exposure. FYRs provide an opportunity to evaluate the site’s cleanup decision (remedy) to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment.
At this time, a protectiveness determination of the remedy for both Operable Units (OUs) (Project Areas) for Contaminated Soils (OU-1) and the Final Remedial Action (OU-2) cannot be made until further information is obtained. Further information will be obtained by applying EPA’s updated soil lead guidance and risk assessment methods. For properties that require a visual barrier, EPA will identify the property owners and provide notification. During future remediation, visual barriers will be placed when contamination exceeds 1,200 parts per million (ppm) for lead at depths greater than 1 foot. Following these steps, a protectiveness determination will be made for OU-1 and OU-2.
