How is EPA conducting sampling at the Old Norwood Dump and Norwood Landfill?
EPA took surface soil samples from areas throughout the former Dump area, in a few locations in Norwood Park and along the access road between the Dump and Norwood Landfill. EPA also took soil samples from areas of the Norwood Landfill that were previously inaccessible due to overgrown vegetation. Geoprobe equipment was used to take sub-surface soil samples from those same areas except for those in the landfill. The geoprobe equipment is capable of taking soil samples of up to 15 feet below the surface. However, due to trees and vegetation on the landfill property, sub-surface samples were collected using a hand auger which is capable of depths up to four feet.
