June 17, 2020 - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has evaluated the risks remaining after fully implementing the 2003 National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for Taconite Iron Ore Processing and determined that risks from this source category are acceptable. EPA has determined the standards provide an ample margin of safety to protect public health and prevent adverse environmental effects. The agency also identified no developments in practices, processes or control technologies that would further reduce emissions of air toxics.
EPA is additionally finalizing minor amendments to the existing regulation. These final amendments clarify that the standards are applicable during periods of startup, shutdown and malfunction and require electronic reporting of performance test results, notifications of compliance status and semi-annual reports. The final amendments also revise testing and monitoring requirements to be more efficient.
