Combining Data into Complete eMotor ALPHA Maps

The Advanced Technology Assessment Branch (ATAB), formerly known as the National Center for Advanced Technology (NCAT), is part of the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory (NVFEL) which assesses the effectiveness of advanced low emission and low fuel consumption technologies for a broad range of key light-duty vehicles, engines, electric motors (eMotor), and transmissions. In support of this work, the ATAB team developed techniques to combine electric motor operating test data into a set of complete eMotor maps suitable for use in complete vehicle simulation models and other technical analyses.

These complete eMotor maps estimate an electric motor’s energy consumption over its complete operating range. For each electric motor analyzed, ATAB uses an in-house modeling tool to combine electric motor test data from benchmarking tests and/or other sources like technical papers and conference presentations into consistent, publishable, complete ALPHA eMotor maps.

There are three types of electric drive components:

• BISG - Belt Integrated Starter Generator, consisting of an inverter, an electric motor, and the engine's front-end pulley/belt drive.
• EDU - Electric Drive Unit, consisting of an inverter, an electric motor, and the drive gearing.
• EMOT - Electric Motor, consisting of an inverter and an electric motor (the gear losses are not accounted for within this device).
