Public Notice: EPA Begins Sixth Five-Year Review of Better Brite Plating Co. Chrome and Zinc Shops Superfund Site
Summary
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the Better Brite Plating Co. Chrome and Zinc Shops Superfund site, located at 519 Lande St. in De Pere, Wisconsin. The site’s operation and maintenance are led by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure that the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the sixth five-year review of this site and is expected to be completed November 2024.
Metal plating operations were conducted at the Chrome Shop from 1978 to 1985 and at the Zinc Shop from 1968 to 1989. Spilled plating solution and waste contaminated soil and groundwater with high levels of heavy metals, including chromium, zinc, cadmium, and cyanide.
After several cleanup measures were conducted, the site’s long-term remedy was selected in 1996. It included replacing the groundwater removal and treatment system at the Chrome Shop, treating the soil and groundwater by stabilizing the chromium, continuing groundwater removal and treatment at the Zinc Shop, and isolating the recharge of contaminated groundwater to basement sumps in a nearby residence.
The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have. You are welcome to contact the Community Involvement Coordinator or Remedial Project Manager with comments.
