A color photo-essay exhibit that depicts America's environmental heritage, the problems that began with industrialization, and how the country has begun to deal with these problems, will be shown for the first time in the Washington, D.C. area from May 24 to June 16.

The exhibit will be shown in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Visitors Center, Waterside Mall, West Tower, 401 M St., S.W. Exhibit hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

The display, titled "Our Only World," was produced by the EPA and has been circulated since November 1973 by the Smithsonian Institution's Traveling Exhibition Service.

EPA Administrator Russell E. Train and Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley will participate with other EPA and Smithsonian officials in a brief opening ceremony on Thusday, May 23 from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m., in the EPA Visitors Center.

The exhibit will be shown in an area of the Visitors Center that will soon house a permanent exhibit demonstrating EPA's development of technology to deal with specific pollution problems.

The 113 full-color photographs were selected from the EPA's Documerica, a special program designed to portray the nature and scope of the environmental crisis and the efforts being made to cope with it.

The photographs represent the work of 47 photographers, and were taken from 10,000 photographs now in the Documerica file. Original color prints identical to those in the exhibit may be purchased by the public through order forms available at the exhibition.
