Fred Hansen was sworn in earlier this week as the new Deputy Administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Hansen replaces former Deputy Administrator Bob Sussman, whose resignation took effect Monday.

EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner said, "I worked extensively with Fred when we were both state environmental directors, and I am exceptionally pleased to have him on board. Fred is one of the most respected environmental leaders in the country, and this agency will benefit immensely from his broad range of experience."

Hansen had been Director of Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality for the past 10 years when President Clinton nominated him to become Deputy Administrator on Sept. 26.

The President Names Fred Hansen for Deputy Administrator at EPA

President Clinton announced today that he intends to nominate Fred Hansen to be the Deputy Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

"Through his accomplished state leadership, Fred Hansen brings real environmental expertise and commitment to this position," the President said. "I am confident that his service at the EPA will be marked by the same excellence and leadership he has shown in Oregon as a long-time environmental leader there."

For the past decade, Mr. Hansen has been director of Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality, where he was considered one of the most influential leaders among state environmental commissioners. During his tenure, Oregon was continuously ranked in the top five most environmentally progressive states.

From 1970-78, Hansen worked in Washington, D.C., both on Capitol Hill and in the Executive Branch, including positions as the Executive Assistant to the Director of the Peace Corps and Deputy Director for President Carter's special project on federal cash management.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oregon in 1968 and received his masters in 1970 from McMaster University in Ontario. He also has completed a year of doctorate work at The Johns Hopkins University. He is married to Joyce E. Cohen, an Oregon state senator.

He was born in 1946 in Portland, Oregon, where he still resides.

Mr. Hansen will replace Robert Sussman, the current EPA Deputy, who has tendered his resignation (effective Oct. 17) to pursue other opportunities in the Administration.
