Landfill Gas Energy Project Data
The LMOP Landfill and Landfill Gas Energy Project Database contains landfill gas (LFG) energy project information, including current project status, project type, actual generated and rated capacity, end user and current year emission reductions. Hundreds of LFG energy projects are currently in operation with applications such as generating electricity, firing kilns, upgrading LFG into pipeline-quality gas, heating greenhouses and buildings and providing steam for industrial processes.
The Excel files provided here include a full list of currently operational projects and a list of under-construction or planned projects. For landfills that report under EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP), LMOP cross-references that dataset by including GHGRP’s 7-digit Facility Identifier.
Viewing the Data
There are many ways to sort and filter the data in the files below so that they are most helpful to you. Commonly used subsets of the project data include:
- Project Type Category or LFG Energy Project Type
- Electricity (includes engines, turbines and cogeneration)
- Direct-use (includes medium-Btu technologies such as boilers and other direct thermal uses)
- Renewable Natural Gas (including option to sort by delivery method - pipeline injection or local use)
- Project Developer
- Project Start Date
- Electric Generation and Rated Capacity (MW)
- LFG Flow to Project (mmscfd)
LFG Energy Project Data Files [September 2024]
The detailed file of operational projects includes separate rows for projects that have changed in size over time and/or use LFG from more than one landfill, while the aggregated file of operational projects contains only a single row for each unique project.

Project Profiles
Pursuant to 5 CFR § 2635.702(c)(2), names are displayed here as the result of recognition for achievement given under an Agency program for accomplishment in support of the Agency’s mission. Any reference to a specific company or commercial product or service by trade name, trademark, manufacturer, company or otherwise does not constitute or imply the endorsement or recommendation of EPA.
These profiles highlight select historical and recent LFG energy projects with information such as location, technology type, energy end user and projected cost savings. Stakeholders may find this information useful while examining opportunities to design new projects. Information contained in these project profiles was last reviewed in March 2024.
LMOP’s Toolkit for Expiring LFG Electricity Power Purchase Agreements provides additional examples and other information to help owners of LFG electricity projects.
