Public-Private Partnership Programs

Global Methane Initiative

Since 2004, EPA has collaborated with other U.S. agencies and departments on global efforts to reduce methane emissions from oil and natural gas operations. The Global Methane Initiative (GMI) is an international public-private partnership focused on reducing barriers to the recovery and use of methane as a valuable energy source. The EPA is one of many federal agencies involved in the GMI and plays a key role by building on the success of the Agency's methane programs. EPA also supports the Secretariat, which performs all of GMI's administrative tasks (e.g., maintains website, sends member e-mails, coordinates meetings).

The GMI works with international organizations, partner countries, and other entities to reduce methane emissions and increase energy security, enhance economic growth, improve air quality and improve worker safety.

The GMI maintains many online resources, such as information specific to the oil and gas sector and an explanation of why methane mitigation is important.

Other Initiatives and Programs

• The International Energy Agency (IEA) works with governments and industry to shape a secure and sustainable energy future. Founded fifty years ago to coordinate responses to major oil supply disruptions, the IEA has evolved to provide analysis, data, policy recommendations, and solutions that enhance the reliability, affordability and sustainability of energy.
• The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI): comprised of 12 of the world’s leading energy companies that produce around a third of global oil and gas. OGCI focuses on leading the industry’s response to climate change and accelerating action towards a net zero future.
• The Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) was launched at COP28 and is a global industry initiative dedicated to speeding up climate action and achieving high-scale impact across the oil and gas sector.
• The World Bank’s Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Partnership is a multi-donor trust fund composed of governments, oil companies, and multilateral organizations committed to ending routine gas at oil production sites across the world and reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector to near zero by 2030.
