EPA EcoBox Tools by Receptors
A receptor is defined as the ecological entity exposed to the stressor. This term may refer to plants and animals (including endangered and threatened species), habitats, or ecosystems. “Ecological component” (U.S. EPA, 1992) is an alternative term used; however, “receptor” is usually clearer in discussions of exposure where the emphasis is on the stressor-receptor relationship (U.S. EPA, 1998).
