Aviation Sector Workgroup
Summary
The Aviation sector is a critical part of the U.S. transportation system, yet it contributes significantly to air pollution, impacting local communities and global air quality. Airports generate emissions from various sources, including ground support equipment (GSE), ground transportation to/from the airports, and aircraft operations. Aircraft NOx emissions are expected to increase in the future due to growing air traffic demand and lack of stricter NOx standards.
This page provides information on current and potential emissions reduction projects in the West Coast region. Concepts to reduce aircraft emissions include tightening aircraft engine emission standards, attracting cleaner aircraft to visit non-attainment areas, and adopting zero-emission technology in ground operations. These ongoing efforts highlight the importance of sustained regulatory action and innovation to balance aviation growth with environmental and community health goals.
Aviation Technology Forums
EPA, California Air Resources Board (CARB) and South Coast Air Quality Management Districts have signed a Letter of Intent (pdf) to jointly host three technology forums aimed at better understanding and advancing zero-emission strategies for airport operations.
- On-Airport Operations
Focusing on optimizing the use of zero-emission support equipment, plugging in at the gate, improving efficiency during turnaround processes, and reducing emissions during aircraft taxiing. - Strategies for Lowering NOx Emissions from Aircraft
Exploring new concepts and advancements in combustor design, selective catalytic reduction, and water misting technologies. Leading companies will discuss the limitations and prospects of existing technologies, along with forward-looking innovations such as electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft. - Operational Practices and Economics of Aircraft Routing
Examining aircraft routing and optimization decisions, environmental and economic considerations for aircraft operations, and conducting feasibility and environmental benefits analyses for cleaner flight visits at local, national, and international levels.
These forums reflect a collaborative effort involving regulatory agencies, academic experts, and industry leaders to identify practical solutions that balance environmental goals with operational efficiency and help shape the future of sustainable aviation and reduce NOx emissions.
